First Aid at Work (1day Emergency First Aid at Work +F)
All employers even the self employed must have staff that hold a valid first aid at work certificate to comply with the Health & Safety (First Aid) at Work Regulations 1981. The Emergency First aid at work +F qualification is aimed at those undertaking the role of an emergency First aider on Forestry Commission land, where a “+F” is required.
About the Emergency First Aid at Work +F qualification
The Level 3 award in Emergency First Aid at Work +F will ensure that delegates that work on Forestry Commission Land meet the forestry commissions first aid policy They will learn the basic skills and knowledge required to manage a casualty and contact the emergency services for professional assistance. The course will cover the legal requirements of being a First Aider in the workplace, and the equipment available to them should their skills be called upon.
Working with the principle of matching skills to your possible accidents/illnesses, those working in core operations will require training that has been delivered with a forestry context (ie sites remote from medical aid and where limited help will be available). Core operations means; harvesting, civil engineering, mechanised ground preparation, planting, fencing, pesticides application, forest nursery activities, or similar. It includes any lone workers or site supervisors.
The course includes practical assessments of:
- Managing a casualty that is unconscious, but breathing
- Managing a casualty the is unconscious and not breathing (including the use of an AED)
- Managing a casualty that is bleeding
- Managing all of the above in a remote setting
The course will also cover minor injuries that could be sustained at work and the skills required to manage a casualty with minor burns.
Although aimed at lower risk workplaces, the course is also suited to workplaces of a larger nature that have full First Aid at Work certificate holders and want to support them with some first aiders qualified in Emergency First Aid.
This qualification is available to those over 16 years. Candidates should hold at least a level 2 numeracy and literacy qualification
The course must be retaken every 3 years is to ensure skills are current and relevant and you comply with current legislation. The HSE recommend an annual refresher of skills also be taken but this is not mandatory and should be considered as part of your risk assessment process.
